Smoking Bans - Love Them or Hate Them?

A friend sent me an article today about a non-smoking apartment building that is being built in New York.  Every new tenant has to sign a waiver saying that both they and any guests they bring into the building will not smoke or risk being taken to court.   Read the full article

Back in my home state of Iowa, a ordinance was put into place that prohibits smoking in any establishment that serves food.  Laws like these are starting to pop up all over the country.

What are your thoughts on smoking bans?  Who should decide whether a business is smoke free?  The owner or the local governement?

Without a doubt, the business owner should be the one to decide whether or not to impliment a ban.

I think smoking should be banned in any place that  serves/allows minors.  It is unfair for children to be put in situations where they have to breath in smoke by irresponsible parents.  It really frustrates me when people smoke in front of kids.

LOVE them!!!  Ohio has a smoking ban indoors (except for private homes).  I think it is fantastic.  I can now take my 4 year old to a sports bar to eat wings and watch a football game.  We can go bowling as a family and not worry about exposing my children to second hand smoke.  I love being able to go to restaurant and not have to worry about smelling the smoke that drifts over from the smoking section.

Can they ban kids too? I would love to be able to go out without hearing or seeing little kids.

I quit smoking .. it wasn't easy. I don't really care about the smoking ban either way. Its unfair no matter how you look at it....

I have standards.. Even if they are double

Actually, that is sort of a rediculous question.  Of course a business has the right to ban kids.  For obvious reasons businesses (except for adult establishments like bars/strip clubs/casinos/etc.) don't choose to do so because it would be horrible for their business.

LOVE IT!!  Smoking is a nasty, dangerous habit that affects anyone and everyone who is exposed...I'm thrilled to live in a state that strictly controls where people can smoke.  (After growing up in a state where smoking is still allowed in many "family" restaurants...gross.)

not allowing smoking in your establishment is a great idea.

The government not allowing smoking in an establishment is a horrible idea.

We're almost into the second decade of the 21st century. People have options and can choose where they spend their dollars. If smoking bothers you, spend your dollar elsewhere. I know I did before louisiana enacted its ban.

Louisiana bans it in any non residential building unless it has a bar permit.

That means even if you have a small business where you are the only worker, you can't smoke. Thats bull.

I'm not a mom.
